SMART Goals

SMART goals help improve achievement and success.  A SMART goal clarifies exactly what is expected and the measures used to determine if the goal is achieved and successfully completed.

A SMART goal is:

Specific and Strategic: In order for a goal to be achieved it must first be well defines.  Don’t just throw a bunch of goal out and see which ones stick.
Answers the question—Who? and What?

Measurable: The success toward meeting the goal can be very specifically measured in one or more ways.  You have probably heard me say “what gets measured gets managed.”
Answers the question—How?

Attainable:  Goals are realistic and can be achieved in a specific amount of time and are reasonable.
Answers the question—Can I do this?

Realistic and Research Bases: The goals are aligned with your values and desires.  You can truly see the expected result before it ever happens.
Answers the question—Is this real to me?

Tangible and Time framed: You can experience the goal in your mind’s eye through the 5 senses.  Goals have a clearly defined time-frame including a target or deadline date.
Answers the question—When?

Examples:

Not a SMART goal:

  • I want to lose 30 lbs and get healthy.
    Does not identify a measurement or time frame, nor identify why the improvement is needed or how it will be used.

SMART goal:

  • I will change my lifestyle and make better choices for my health in the areas of  Detox, Nutrition,  Exercise, Balancing my Hormones and improving my Neurologic integrity by fully engaging myself in the curriculum I am learning from Dr. Adams.  I will lose 30 pounds by October 31st 20XX by completing the necessary steps outlined in my program.  I will better myself and my health for me and for my loved ones so I may live more life and experience a better quality of life.
